Ahead of next week’s presidential election, Igbo political and traditional leaders in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, under the auspices of Igbo Delegates Assembly (IDA) have said that General Muhammadu Buhari is their preferred candidate for the election.
In a town hall meeting with the Igbo leaders and traditional rulers in the 19 northern states at the party’s campaign office in Abuja, President of the group, Samuel Iyama, said they were at the campaign office to declare their support for the APC candidate .
He urged Buhari to ensure peaceful election ,adding that the nation cannot afford another political violence after that of 2011 elections.
“We don’t want the unfortunate incident of the, 2011 to be repeated and we cannot afford another civil war.”
On his part, coordinator of NDI EZE UDO in the FCT , Eze Uche Egenti, urged General Buhari to galvanises Nigeria and sanitise the polity .
“We are here to support your aspiration, we are the Igbo’s living in the North, we are here because we know you, we are here as a people who have contributed immensely to the development of Nigeria, we plead with you to sanitise the polity. People have raised religious issues about you but we know you are not a bigot, we want you to know that we are solidly behind you.”
Buhari who expressed happiness over the endorsement, assured the Igbo leaders that they will not be disappointed as he will protect the interest of the Igbo’s in his government.
National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun also urged the Igbos to embrace change and rise above parochial politics.
